How To Write A Blog Post…Er, Creatively?

Out of billions of results from Google Results Page, which we call the Search Engine Results Page (SERP), you’ve seen a lot of similarities when it comes to teaching you how to write a blog post.

Now, everyone can do that. Well, you can write an outline or do you research, stuff like that.

Everyone can write an introduction, the body, and the conclusion. Yet, it sucks because there’s no sense of spirit or drive in it. Something’s lacking. And I want to find that out on my own. I did.

It’s the power of storytelling.

New Opt in 1 uploaded by Mecyll Gaspary on July 27, 2019.

If you think creative writing is only applicable to fiction, you’re wrong. Just think about how the big media and advertising companies successfully entice people to buy the product.

Do you believe it’s brought by logic? Do people buy simply because they’re looking at the specs?

Certainly, they do. Everyone compares which is which as part of their purchasing power. That’s economics. It’s given.

Yet, what makes them tick? What makes your audience tick, my friend? It’s your way of delivering the information beautifully.

How?

That’s a good question.

How can you enhance your storytelling skills in each blog post? Before we delve into the specific strategies, allow me to show you the reasons for doing so.

I don’t want you to jump into impulsive actions without thinking the logic behind this game-changing tactic.

Reason 1: Increasing Social Intelligence, Increases Sales

Dr. Sandeep Atree shared on LinkedIn that when it comes to selling effectively one should be conscious enough to employ tactics involving social intelligence. “Selling was never meant to be pushy or persuasive,” he wrote.

According to him, rather than thinking that generating sales is a mere commercial aspect to make more money, it’s a social activity in which the seller (you) and the consumer (target audience) connect in an emotional level affecting their choices.

To build that “intangible bond” he refers to, knowing the storytelling process plays an essential role. In today’s blogging, it’s not about reviewing products to make an affiliate income.

Instead, you put yourself as a friend of that someone telling a story about how a product or service affected you positively.

As far as marketing goes, I could see how Jollibee, a Philippine equivalent for McDonald’s, is seen as one of the best maneuvers when it comes to promoting the fast-food chain to its target market using the power of storytelling.

They use the emotional sector of economics immensely to the extent where it becomes their brand, resulting in thriving for more than 4 decades in the industry.

Apple did the same with their products, which becomes the standard of today’s advertising. If you see the video below, examine how the company uses emotions to touch their impulsivity of purchasing new releases. Provoking the senses of the market.

If you think about it, what makes these brands similar and why do people make these as part of their lifestyle? Again, it’s because of the effective storytelling delivered to them. Other big brands like Nike, Adidas, among others do the same strategies.

This is the big reason for me, as a content writer, to emphasize the power of storytelling when it comes to blogging. Gone are the days when the websites contain a plain piece of information.

Today, people value personal accounts showing their vulnerability to relate and convince to buy whatever they think will help them. People buy stories, not products. They purchase the products unconsciously by emotional impact.

Wherever your income sources are, be it from the affiliate programs or paid courses, it’s essential to retract with our content writing strategies and add a bit of emotional spice to generate optimal results, i.e. traffic, leads, or sales.

Reason 2: Future Digital Marketing – Adding Value, Not Noise

This is concerning the previous point. If you think writing a blog post is merely promoting something or reviewing a product, you underestimated the power of blogging, in general.

The fact you have built an online platform, you already acquired the greatest asset to express the inner voice across the world.

Redefining our traditional strategies – more blog posts, more traffic – is what most expert bloggers and expert SEO folks dig into these days.

SEO remains an ingredient to generate traffic to implement your sales funnel and start making money as a content writer.

Certainly, searching for the right keywords and implement the basics of SEO in our content remains vital in our content writing. Yet, it’s not enough. What’s the use of having an epic content without a voice?

Your reader examines and familiarizes your writing style. They want to know your opinion about something, an issue of a product, service, program, experience, or global phenomena. Whatever it is you want to share, they look at you and listen to what you have to say to them.

When I began my writing career in 2014, I remembered how the editor pushes me to write 5 articles per day believing that the more posts I make, the more traffic comes into the site.

The #1 Writing Tool

That’s before Google implemented a series of algorithms “filtering” the best content on the top Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

Today, I could see the difference with the blogosphere and how more and more content writers learn the power of delivering stories within the content aside from the objective of the post itself.

You may be informing your readers about the new fashion trend, but you still have to tell them why they will buy your idea?

Why would they spend another minute with you? Granted, as a content writer, you have to consider the emotions as a powerful weapon to generate a sale. That’s the reality in the industry.

For example, they may write about “How to make a gluten-free lifestyle easier than you think” post and list down a whole bunch of tasks at once. That’s how it was before. Nowadays, sharing the history of having a “gluten-free lifestyle” becomes a blogger’s obligation.

The same thing happened to me as I evolved from a newbie content writer to professional blogger over 5 years. I have seen a lot of changes with how the traffic game evolved within the period.

Old tactics comprise writing more posts, placing a lot of keywords, and a lot more are not significant tasks for a content writer anymore. Storytelling is.

The way you make your readers feel smart and ease with you as they read your content paves the way to your generated income as a writer.

Ways To Revive Storytelling For Content Marketing

Given these reasons, it’s deemed important to revive storytelling for the sake of content marketing. Why do I include content marketing here?

Content writing is where you implement the basics of storytelling tactics you learn in this post. Once you publish the content, sharing the post comes into the picture in which content marketing strategies are sought.

This includes social media posts, email marketing, videos for YouTube channels, as well as uploading audios for podcasting.

All of these areas need effective storytelling methods for a content writer, comprising the bloggers, freelance writers, authors, and other digital content writers.

Whatever profession you may belong to and whatever media you will utilize to spread your message and information for your audience, you need to know how to develop the skills of a storyteller to hook them right from the start.

The question is, how?

Matt Bowman, president of Thrive Internet Marketing Agency, wrote on Forbes and pointed out that in today’s content marketing, like fiction, a content writer must know the 3 important areas of telling a story: the beginning, the middle, and the end. In the creation of the plot, it’s like the exposition, the climax, and the denouement.

Plot uploaded by Mecyll Gaspary on July 27, 2019.
This is how the plot looks like.

You take the hero of the journey, who is your reader or target user, from the beginning of the story she’s in. Like any other novel, that’s where you introduce the problem or conflict, where most stories begin. The hero faces trouble and she has to find the solutions to resolve it.

Consequently, your user is forced to move along the proposition you have – the solution in exchange for any compensation from her – as you bring her towards the middle of the content in which she doesn’t feel like you’re promoting something.

You deliver the story as if you’re her friend listening and understanding his situation – again, without promoting anything, yet. Thus, the desperation to learn the answers from you is evident.

When you establish that in the beginning, along with the common methods most content marketers use to provide grounds in the middle, you won’t find any concerns to generate a lead towards the end of the post

So, what you’re going to do is the following the process:

User lands on your site = show her the problem >> propose to show solutions in exchange for staying on the page (blog post) >> convert (lead or sale)

For Bowman, most content marketers use:

1) quotation to refer or to hook the reader’s interest;

2) statistic to show facts of your point;

3) question to intrigue them or provoke their suppressed thoughts and emotions, visualizing the situation; and

4) anecdote to tell short stories, which I do often.

The fourth technique is what I usually do in my posts. As you can see, I tend to share my story in a section in which it’s applicable to build a rapport with you.

Even though as an INTJ, it’s quite a challenge to share my take on something because of my personality, but my sincerity overpowers that hurdle. I want to share myself with you as my reader, not only for the sake of promoting and earn money.

How To Learn Storytelling The Right Way?

When it comes to learning different methods of storytelling, what I suggest is enrolling Masterclass where the world-renowned people in the field will teach you their techniques regardless of the niche you belong to.

From Neil Gaiman, Dan Brown, Malcolm Gladwell, and a lot more best-selling and multi-awarded writers are there.

These people teach you the fundamentals of story creation. Even if you won’t become a fiction writer as I am, you still possess the skills most content writers don’t have.

If you want to start improving your writing, I recommend you start your own professional blog and attract your audience the right way.

I’m happy to share my partnership with WP Engine to share with you how grateful I am to experience blogging in a different and profitable way. Click the image below to know about it.

Blogging today is not about writing a blog post alone. It’s a post that contains the message with an intent to build a relationship with your designated stakeholder. In my case, I’m targeting content writers, in general, particularly on how they can make money as a writer.

So, aside from showing various opportunities, they could find online in the field, I’m telling them my story and others as well in the pursuit of reaching the goal of making passive income in my niche.

From my standpoint, enrolling in Masterclass as well as using the Erin Condren Planners (I love using planners, by the way) will guarantee you the success in the content writing industry as organized as possible.

I saw the entire program myself and for only $180 yearly plan, you get the All-Access Plan which is incredible because – come on – these people are world-class and they’re here to teach us how they produce those masterpieces.

I would indulge in their classes and learn as much as I could since I’m also a fiction author with 3 books under my belt.

Conclusion

You might have been in trouble on how you can write a blog post as effectively as you can. You may have read a lot of articles teaching you how to convert a particular user to a loyal fan. Yet, you never succeeded.

You might have asked yourself why albeit tons of strategies have been done. You still didn’t see any hint of success. Let me tell you straight, my friend. You lack the skills of a storyteller.

Never – ever – underestimate the power of social intelligence just as Apple, Jollibee, Nike, and other big companies have done on their marketing.

Now, it’s your turn.

Learn how to become the best storyteller, not just a mere blogger. Don’t write reviews for the sake of informing. Tell them why do they need to buy the product you’re promoting. Share your story. Make them vulnerable. Provoke them, if you must.

This is my take on how to write a blog post. I tell stories.

“The beauty of this book lies in its emotional depth. It doesn’t sugarcoat the difficulties of relationships or our baggage. The story forces you to confront those uncertainties we often try to ignore. And while it keeps you questioning if Leslie and Alexander can make it work, it also leaves you rooting for them, hoping against hope that they’ll beat the odds.”
