You wouldn’t believe the possibilities writing can take you. I couldn’t do it myself, either, until I wrote a blog post for a business-niche website that reached 10K pageviews. I know you’re asking, “How did you do that?”

Honestly, I don’t know.

And I guess it’s true for most writers. The truth is we don’t have a specific formula for writing pieces of content that would perform better or, at least, predict it. However, we can take advantage of more than a handful of writing tools nowadays, especially free writing apps and keyword research platforms.

To help you save time, I have researched and compiled a gigantic list of various writing tools, from blogging, content writing, and copywriting to learning the basics of digital content writing like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which may be available for free and paid plans.

Through using them in the writing process, developing content has been a lot easier than before. Let alone the guessing games we used to do to figure out the right keywords as we did years ago.

For instance, we have Semrush, an all-in-one tool for content marketing and SEO. Its features are powerful enough to give more accurate projections. In financial planning, it would be the same as determining your rate of return assumptions.

Similarly, we use different techniques and discover more possibilities, as we continue to explore our ways to keep improving. Even the seasoned writers in the field do the same process.

How I Wrote The Blog Post That Reached 10,000 Pageviews For 6 Months

In the past few days, I posted a screenshot on LinkedIn that showed my previous client’s traffic in one of the successful blog posts I wrote.

It is one of the hundreds of blog posts I have written for him since 2018. He told me that I made a huge contribution in leveraging his online business.

Then, this idea dawned on me. What if I would write my experience, particularly how I wrote those blog posts that drove great results?

1. Learn How To Find The Right People.

The internet has countless volumes of information available for ordinary people like us. It has become more accessible for everybody in modern times. It is undebatable, as we all agree it’s a fact.

Yet, we tend to forget the significance of providing the right information for the people we want to attract. Probably, the “easy way” influenced our attitude towards credibility and potential profitability.

More often than not, we fail to step back and evaluate whether the information we read is facts or opinions. This concern also covers writers, especially those who are irresponsible with their content.

Given today’s unfortunate sense of journalism, we have to reconsider our perceptions toward writing and become more responsible writers.

In designing a great piece of content, we have to define the “right target” for the “right information,” regardless of the niche.

It takes time and a lot of practice, as well as the right tools to use to craft an effective piece of content. We need metrics or real-person inquiries from forums as guidelines to make this writing goal possible.

How can we find the right people for our content?

We have several ways to find them on the internet, both for free and paid plans. But we can’t rely on them without evaluating our goals first.

If you find Semrush expensive right now, you can use the search engines. When you type in specific keywords on Google, you find hundreds of millions of information you might need for your content.

Within seconds, you find different websites that provided the same or similar content as yours. But don’t be discouraged.

Rather than discouraging yourself with a wrong belief, wherein you refuse to write about it simply because someone else already did, treat them as your benchmark to figure out the topics they might have skipped or missed.

These become your clues to improve the existing content with a unique or fresh perspective from you. This approach is the best way to attract their audience to visit your blog post and scan for anything they might be missing.

Figure out regularities.

Using the potential keywords, examine the similarities with the headlines.

Make a list of the words repeatedly used or common among the websites on the search results page. You can see them in their headlines, URLs, and metadata. (See figure)

You can also visit their web pages and check their users’ comments. You can also go to popular forums, such as Reddit or Quora to find out your audience’s interests, especially their specific questions left unanswered.

The key here is being investigative. As a content writer, you have to take advantage of the information provided right in front of your eyes, aside from following your gut instincts, which are, by the way, your powerful asset.

My strategy:

When I wrote the blog post, I used Jaaxy (my client’s tool of choice) to find the keywords to use for the content.

As you can see below, you will find the metrics you need, but it is not as detailed as Semrush provides.

2. Learn How To Write A Killer Content Structure.

Before I started writing 200 blog posts with 2,500 words on average, he presented a structure he wanted me to follow. It will help me design each post that is consistent with the existing blog posts.

What I did that has been unique in his content are the “empathetic hooks” to tug the reader’s attention and provoke their feelings while reading the lengthy content. We’ll talk more about it later.

A killer content structure is about coherence.

A killer content structure shows coherent ideas from the first paragraph to the last one. At the same time, apply the right SEO distribution, from the headlines down to the last word of the last paragraph.

The reason for doing this is to make sure the Google bots understand the overall content, as they crawl into your published pages.

The search engines need to see the main keywords, as well as the related ones, to learn your goal and evaluate the red flags (if you plan to spam).

For example, your headline is “How to make money as a writer.”

The sub-headings and the paragraphs should contain the keywords referring to your headlines. Only when the keywords are in place, the bots will understand your overall content.

Am I making sense?

Make sure your readers and the search engines understand.

In the content writing process, especially for digital marketing, it is a must for writers to draft content that both readers and the search engine bots understand.

Hence, the structure plays a significant role in achieving the best results you want to reach.

Consider applying SEO in the following areas:

  1. Headlines
  2. Content sections/sub-headings
  3. Content flow (make your arguments convincing)
  4. Content supplements, such as videos or photos
  5. Categories for easier accessibility (if you have a website)
  6. Irresistible conclusion with call-to-action (CTA)
  7. Permalink/URL

The ones I mentioned are the basic but powerful areas in your content. When overlooked, you might be missing a lot. If you are using Semrush, you will see several content ideas they provide for you. (See figure)

3. Learn How To Improve Your Emotional Writing Skills.

A company named Motista conducted a study, targeting Fortune 500 companies and their business growths. They found out that applying emotional marketing in their business resulted in 52% overall growth.

It is no surprise for me, too. But I am grateful to find out concrete proof that emotional writing gives exponential results in our content.

It is the secret for my writing success—the secret to reaching 10,000 pageviews for 6 months consecutively.

My goal was clear, and my delivery of the argument convinced them easily because I ensured that I make them feel their struggles are valid, their thoughts and feelings are welcome without judgment.

I wrote the blog post with the intent to convince my readers of an argument. When they land into the post, I want to make sure that they feel heard, or they are talking with a friend.

Make them realize that their emotions are valuable, too.

The more you take advantage of this technique, the more you start seeing results.

As you may know, content writers are in-demand in businesses, and traditional business-related content tends to disregard emotions versus writing fiction or poetry.

People need evidence to convince them to purchase your products—whatever it is. If your goal is to increase more traffic, then, make sure your headlines contain emotional or empathetic hooks or words to increase impressions and clicks.

The word boring creates interest because of its irony with the expected gains. And people love ironies and paradoxes of life. Don’t we?

My suggestion is to go back and review your existing content and apply the following:

  1. Find the right keywords to use.
  2. Structure your content with the right amount of SEO and flow.
  3. Add emotional or empathetic hooks to tug the readers’ repressed feelings towards the subject you are writing on.
  4. End your post with a strong conclusion. Make sure you include suggestions or recommendations for your readers to take action.
